The court stated that it would be a mistake to disregard the accusations made by a woman against Veer Singh, the son of the founder and chairman of Max Group, as it could encourage other men to violate the law and take advantage of women without consequences. The court ordered the registration of a FIR against Veer Singh for allegedly conducting a sham marriage with the woman to engage in sexual relations with her. The order was issued by Special Judge Arul Verma of the Saket Court, who rejected the metropolitan magistrate’s ruling and emphasized that the woman’s dignity cannot be compromised.

According to the accusations made against Veer Singh, he deceived a woman into believing that they had legally married in 2018, which led to sexual relations between them and the birth of a child. The woman alleged that Singh and his family organized a Buddhist marriage ceremony in Taiwan with the intention of later renouncing it. She further claimed that Singh left her stranded after asking her to pack her bags in 2020, and that he monitored her movements without her consent.

On the other hand, Singh’s lawyer argued that their email communications demonstrate that he had never intended to marry the woman and that he had communicated this to her.

After examining the facts, the court found that sexual relations were established on the basis of a mistaken belief in a legal marriage. The judge also observed that there was evidence of a ceremony between the parties in Taiwan, along with post-wedding functions. The court noted that such a ceremony would have convinced the woman that a lawful marriage had occurred, leading her to cohabit with and have sexual intercourse with Veer Singh.

The court relied on Facebook posts as evidence that the woman was deceived into believing that she and Singh were married.

The court also expressed its view that the woman’s accusations of being recorded in her home while breastfeeding and changing her child were extremely inappropriate and necessitated investigation by the police. Such conduct, the court added, violated all norms of decency and made a woman feel unsafe in her own home.

Given the details of the allegations, the court concluded that the woman was a victim who had been left in a difficult situation. Therefore, to ensure that justice was done, it was appropriate to investigate the alleged offences.

However, the court was of the opinion that there was insufficient evidence to implicate other members of Singh’s family in the case. The court clarified that the allegations of conspiracy against Singh’s family members lacked any basis at present.
