Supreme Court Raises Alarm Over Fake Lawyers, Directs BCI to Submit Verification Report in 8 Weeks

On Thursday, January 24, the Supreme Court expressed serious concerns over the extensive delays by Bar Councils in verifying advocates’ law degrees and enrolments. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, along with Justices Sanjay Kumar and K.V. Viswanathan, was hearing a transfer petition filed by the Bar Council of India (BCI). Addressing the persistent issue of pending degree verifications, the CJI noted:

“It is a very serious thing. The verification drive must be expedited. There has to be a timeline for this”.

Senior Advocate R. Balasubramanian, appearing for the BCI, explained to the bench that the verification process is carried out on a state-wise basis, leading to delays.
Considering this, the bench directed the BCI to provide an updated status report within eight weeks.

Notably, in April 2023, a bench led by then-CJI Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices P.S. Narasimha and J.B. Pardiwala, had ordered the establishment of a High-Powered Committee to supervise the verification of advocates’ degree certificates.
